When to Go

Redondela has a mild Atlantic climate — wet in winter, warm and green in summer, rarely extreme in either direction. July and August are the driest months and see the most pilgrim traffic on the Camino Portugués. The Festa da Coca in late June is one of the most distinctive local festivals in the province: a dragon effigy (the coca) parades through the streets, representing a mythical beast that supposedly terrorised the town. It's worth timing a visit around if you're in Galicia at midsummer.

The Festa do Choco in May is smaller but gastronomically satisfying — a good excuse to eat a lot of cuttlefish. Spring (April–June) is an excellent time to walk the Camino Portugués through this stretch, with the landscape at its greenest and the crowds manageable.
