Monterrei Wine Route

One of the five wine DOs of Galicia, producing crisp Godello whites and reds from native grapes

The Monterrei DO is the smallest and southernmost of Galicia's five wine regions, occupying the warm river valley around Verín. Whites here are dominated by Godello and Treixadura — crisp, mineral, less aromatic than Albariño — and the reds are usually made from Mencía, the same grape that defines neighbouring Bierzo across the border in León. Many of the wineries are small family operations open by appointment.

A loop drive from Verín takes in the cluster around Monterrei village (right below the castle): Bodegas Quinta da Muradella, Crego e Monaguillo, and Pazo de Monterrey are among the most accessible names. The Monterrei DO Wine Route website lists current opening hours and tasting fees. Late summer through harvest in early October is the best time, when the vineyards are in full leaf and the cellars are active.
