Verín

Galician border town in the Monterrei valley, known for thermal springs and the masked Entroido carnival.

Verín is a small town in the Monterrei valley in southeastern Galicia, close to the Portuguese border. The town is known for its thermal springs and its carnival — the Entroido de Verín is one of the wildest in Galicia, with masked figures called cigarróns in brightly coloured costumes chasing people through the streets.

Above the town stands the Castle of Monterrei, a massive fortified complex with a medieval tower, a 13th-century church, and a Renaissance palace. The surrounding valley produces good wines under the Monterrei denomination, and the hot springs at Cabreiroá and Sousas have been drawing visitors since Roman times.
