The two clear windows are the carnival in February (varies by year, always the week before Lent) and the late-summer wine harvest in September and early October. Both are when the town is at its liveliest — carnival is one of Galicia's defining events, and the harvest brings the wine villages around Monterrei into focus.
Summer is hot for inland Galicia — Verín regularly tops 35°C in July and August, more like Castile than the coast. The spa pavilions, the river, and the shaded streets of the old town help, but high summer is not the best time to walk up to the castle. Spring is mild and green; winter is cold and often damp but the wine bars and the warmth of Galician interiors are at their best then.
