The social heart of Malasaña — a wide, tree-lined square with a monument to the 1808 uprising at its centre and café terraces around the edges. During the day it functions as a neighbourhood square; from late afternoon it becomes the meeting point for Malasaña's bohemian, alternative crowd.
The surrounding streets contain the highest concentration of independent bars, vintage shops, record stores, and tattoo parlours in Madrid. On summer evenings the square fills with people sitting on the grass or the surrounding benches with cans and bottles; later, the bars along Calle del Pez, Calle de San Andrés, and Calle Fuencarral take over.
