Mercado de San Antón

Chueca's three-level glass-and-steel covered market rebuilt in 2011, with food stalls, a restaurant, and rooftop bar

Chueca's covered market, rebuilt in 2011 as a three-level glass-and-steel food destination. The ground floor has traditional fresh-produce stalls; the first floor is all gourmet counters and tapas bars (jamón, oysters, anchovies, sushi, pintxos); and the top floor has a full rooftop restaurant with terrace and city views.

Best visited for lunch at the first-floor tapas counters or a drink on the roof. More expensive than a traditional market but the produce is excellent and the building pleasant. Located on Calle de Augusto Figueroa, the heart of the Chueca shopping strip. Metro Chueca.

A story
The original Mercado de San Antón opened in 1945. When it was rebuilt and reopened in 2011, the model was deliberately upscale and food-focused, aimed at the affluent, food-obsessed residents of Chueca rather than the bargain-hunters who use traditional markets.
