Parque Hernández is the green heart of Melilla's new town — a pleasant formal garden ringed by Modernista buildings that gives a good sense of the city's prosperity during the early 20th century. The park contains a bandstand and benches under mature trees, and in the evenings it fills with locals taking their paseo. The surrounding streets contain some of the best examples of Enrique Nieto's work in close proximity.
From here you are well positioned to walk the main Modernista circuit. The Palacio de la Asamblea is two blocks to the east; the Casino Español and the covered market are nearby. It is worth sitting for a coffee at one of the terrace cafes along the park's edge and watching Melilla's distinctly Spanish urban life unfold.
