Plaza de Toros de Melilla

Historic bullring from Spanish Melilla, nicknamed the Mosque of Bullfighting for its unusual profile.

Melilla's bullring is one of the city's stranger architectural leftovers: a Spanish civic arena planted on the North African coast, with a pale, almost domed outline that earned it the nickname the Mosque of Bullfighting. Whether or not you have any interest in bullfighting, the building says a lot about the identity Melilla has tried to project.

It stands close to the modernista centre and works best as a short architectural stop rather than a destination in itself. Look at the exterior, the scale of the ring, and the way it sits among apartment blocks and palms; it is one of those Melilla sights where the context is as interesting as the building.
