Cartagena is a port city first and a beach base second, but there are good swims nearby. Cala Cortina, just east of the harbour entrance, is the easiest small beach from the centre. For wilder coves and longer sand, continue toward Cabo de Palos, Calblanque, or the Mar Menor.
