Getting Around

The old centre of Cartagena is compact and best explored on foot. Most major sights are within a 15-minute walk of the harbour, though the climbs to the castle hill and upper streets can be hot in summer.

For beaches, outlying forts, and the Mar Menor, a car is useful. Local buses cover parts of the municipality, but they are designed for residents rather than travellers trying to link several sights in one day.
