Cullera sits where the Júcar River meets the Mediterranean, close enough to Valencia for a day trip but with a shape of its own. The town is backed by a bare limestone hill, topped by the Castell de Cullera, and fronted by a chain of broad sandy beaches.
It is a resort town, but not only a resort town. Cullera has a Moorish old quarter, rice fields on the edge of the Albufera landscape, and a surprisingly vivid pirate story at the Museu Cova del Dragut, which remembers the Ottoman corsair raid that emptied the town in the 16th century.
The best visit starts above town at the castle, then drops through the old lanes before heading to the sea. The beaches are easy and family-friendly, but the hill, river mouth, watchtowers, and rice-country setting give Cullera more texture than a simple apartment-strip beach stop.
