Gothenburg claims more clubs per square metre than any other Swedish city, and the Kungsportsavenyn -- locals call it "the Avenyn" -- is where most of the action concentrates. Bars, pubs, and nightclubs line the avenue from the old town to Gotaplatsen, and you can go bar-hopping for hours without repeating yourself.
Brasserie Ferdinand
One of the most popular bars among locals, in a basement on Drottninggatan with soft lighting and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city. More than 200 brands of beer on offer, plus a menu of burgers, sandwiches, and meatballs. Live music on weekends.
7:ans
An old bar that has been on Kungstorget 7 for over a hundred years. Atmospheric and unpretentious -- a great place for a quiet beer or glass of wine.
Nefertiti
One of Gothenburg's trendiest clubs, in a cool basement space at Hvitfeldtsplatsen 6. Primarily a jazz club, but also plays salsa, blues, hip hop, and soul.
Heaven 23
On the 23rd floor of the Hotel Gothia Towers, this bar and restaurant has sweeping views over the city. Come for a cocktail even if you skip the food.
The Excet
One of the largest clubs in the city, at Vasagatan 52 just off the Avenyn. Three floors, two dance floors, and a roof terrace.
