Getting Around

Gothenburg is a walking-friendly city with a good tram and bus network. The historic tram system is the most convenient way to reach attractions outside the immediate centre, and ferries connect to the archipelago islands.

Tram and Bus

Gothenburg’s historic tram system travels through the city with stations located conveniently throughout the city center. Gothenburg’s bus system will also take you where you need to go, and it’s a good choice if you’re going a little farther outside of the city center. All the routes and maps in the bus and tram stations are in Swedish, so if you don’t speak the language, try to find a version in your language before your trip.

Ticket System

All of the public transportation in Gothenburg works on a ticket/pass system. You can buy a single ride ticket, a ticket that works for several days or, if you’re planning on spending a good bit of time in Gothenburg, a prepaid card. The pass and all tickets can be used on all public transport options.

Taxis

Taxis are easy to find in Gothenburg, especially along the main thoroughfares in the city center. They can be expensive, so either establish a fixed price with the driver or make sure to grab a cab with a fare meter. There are quite a few taxis in Gothenburg operated by unlicensed drivers, so beware. You’ll know it’s a “real” taxi if it’s got a taxi sign and driver and company identification in the cab.****

Bike

For a different way to experience the sights of Gothenburg, rent a bike! There are numerous bike rental places around the city center and Gothenburg boasts an impressive system of bike trails.
