Liseberg

Scandinavia's largest amusement park, operating since 1923 in the city centre

Liseberg is Scandinavia's largest amusement park and the most-visited tourist attraction in Sweden. It sits right in the centre of Gothenburg — barely a 10-minute tram ride from the main square — and manages to feel genuinely integrated into city life rather than separate from it.

The park has a mix of thrill rides and gentler attractions. Helix, a launched roller coaster that opened in 2014, is consistently ranked among the best in Europe. AtmosFear, a drop tower that lifts riders 116 metres before releasing them, has become a Gothenburg landmark. For children, there are carousels, a wooden coaster, and a lakeside setting with fairground games.

In December, Liseberg's Christmas market transforms the park into one of the most atmospheric Christmas celebrations in Scandinavia — five million lights, traditional Swedish Christmas food, glögg (mulled wine), and an outdoor ice rink. Season runs roughly end of November to just before Christmas.

A story
Liseberg opened in 1923 as part of Gothenburg's tercentenary celebrations and was always intended to be permanent — unlike most exposition parks, which close once the fair is over. The park has been expanded continuously since then and now has some of the world's best-rated roller coasters. Helix, which opened in 2014, regularly tops European rankings. The Christmas market at Liseberg, running from late November through December, is one of the largest and most atmospheric in Scandinavia.
