Dog Sledding and Snowmobile Safaris

Dog sledding is the quintessential Lapland winter activity and several operators around Kiruna offer it, from two-hour introductions to multi-day expeditions staying overnight in wilderness cabins. The experience of driving your own team of huskies across a frozen lake as temperatures hover around -15°C is one of the more visceral things you can do in Europe.

Most operators are based in the forests and lakes around Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi. A short trip (2–3 hours) covers enough terrain to get a real sense of the landscape; longer expeditions of three to five days take you deep into the tundra, well beyond any road. The dogs are working animals rather than pets, and watching a well-run team in full cry is worth the experience by itself.

Snowmobile safaris cover far greater distances than dog sledding and are better suited to exploring the wider wilderness. Half-day and full-day trips typically head into the mountains, often crossing into Norway. No prior experience is required; operators provide full instruction, equipment, and thermal overalls. Some tours combine snowmobiling with Aurora hunting.

Both activities require advance booking; the most popular operators sell out weeks ahead during December and January. Most tours depart directly from Kiruna or Jukkasjärvi with hotel pickup available.
