Gamla Linköping

Open-air museum village of historic Linköping buildings relocated from the city centre

Gamla Linköping is an open-air museum village about two kilometres west of the city centre, consisting of around 90 historic buildings relocated here from Linköping's old centre during urban renewal in the mid-20th century. The streets and buildings — craftsmen's workshops, a pharmacy, a sweet shop, a bakery, and dozens of wooden residential houses — have been arranged to recreate the feel of a 19th-century Swedish market town.

Unlike purpose-built period reconstructions, every building here is the genuine article: moved from its original site in central Linköping when the city centre was redeveloped. Several buildings are open as craft workshops and period shops, some still operating as businesses. The adjacent Valla Fritidsområde park provides good walking and cycling terrain. It takes about two hours to cover the village at a relaxed pace.

A story
Gamla Linköping was created in the 1950s and 60s when Linköping demolished large parts of its old centre to build modern infrastructure — a common Swedish urban planning decision of that era. Rather than simply tear down the 18th and 19th-century wooden houses, the city moved them here to preserve them. The result is something more honest than most open-air museums: these are real buildings from real addresses, relocated rather than reconstructed.
