Nordens Ark

380-hectare wildlife park for endangered Nordic species, half an hour north of Lysekil

Nordens Ark is a 383-hectare wildlife park on the old Åby Manor estate, conceived not as a zoo for entertainment but as a breeding centre for endangered Nordic and Eurasian species. You walk gravel paths through forest and meadow enclosures that hold wolves, wolverines, lynx, brown bears, snow leopards, Persian leopards, and a sometimes-glimpsed Pallas's cat — the animals have enough space that sightings are not guaranteed, which is the point.

Allow at least three hours; many visitors come for the day. There is a restaurant by the entrance, and a small visitor centre explaining the breeding work. From Lysekil drive 30 km north on Route 162 toward Hunnebostrand. Open daily year-round but with shorter winter hours; check before visiting in January-February.

A story
The park focuses entirely on endangered species and runs breeding programmes for everything from Persian leopards to Amur tigers. Animals bred at Åby are routinely sent to other parks and, in the case of European birds and amphibians, released back into the wild. It is not a zoo in the entertaining sense — it is genuinely a working ark.
