The Backa rock carvings near Brastad are some of the more accessible of the thousands of Bronze Age petroglyphs scattered across Bohuslän. The main outcrop carries dozens of incised figures: ships, hunters with bows, horses, and the large isolated "Shoemaker" — a 1.7-metre tall stylised human that has become one of the icons of Scandinavian Bronze Age art.
The carvings were originally painted; today the visitor authority repaints the grooves in red ochre so they are easy to read from the boardwalk. Information panels in Swedish and English explain the iconography. The site is open and free, about 20 minutes north of Lysekil by car. Combine with the larger Tanum panels further north for a fuller picture.
