Royal Swedish Opera

The Royal Swedish Opera sits elegantly on Gustav Adolfs torg, its Neo-Renaissance facade facing the water and the Royal Palace across the bridge. The current building opened in 1898, replacing an earlier theatre where King Gustav III — himself an opera fanatic — was famously assassinated at a masked ball in 1792. Inside, the gilded auditorium seats around 1,100 and hosts opera and ballet productions of consistently high quality. Even if you do not catch a performance, the building's exterior is worth admiring, especially lit up on a winter evening. Guided tours run periodically and offer a look at the ornate foyer and backstage areas.
