Gamla Bron — the Old Bridge — is Umeå's oldest surviving bridge over the Ume River, a 301-metre span connecting the city centre to the Teg district on the south bank. It was built in the 1930s and is now reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, making it one of the more pleasant river crossings in northern Sweden.
The walk across offers good views of the river in both directions: east toward the Gulf of Bothnia, where the river braids and widens into delta channels, and west toward the forest that quickly closes in along the banks. In summer, the bridge sees steady foot traffic; in winter, it gives a clear view of the frozen river and the birch trees along the bank, their white trunks stark against the snow. It connects directly to the riverside walking paths on both banks.
