Umeå Town Hall was built in the immediate aftermath of the 1888 fire that destroyed virtually the entire city. It stands on Rådhusesplanaden in the centre of town, a solid neoclassical building that forms the civic heart of the post-fire grid. The wide, birch-lined boulevard in front of it was itself part of the fire-prevention strategy — a firebreak wide enough that the next blaze could not easily jump across.
The building remains in use as the city's administrative centre and is not generally open to tourists, but the exterior is worth seeing in the context of the rebuilt city. Standing here and looking down the esplanade gives the clearest sense of what Umeå did deliberately after 1888: it rebuilt itself as a planned, fire-resistant city, with generous spaces that have shaped its character ever since.
