Medieval Church Ruins

Dozen roofless medieval churches open to the sky

Visby once had sixteen churches within its walls — an extraordinary concentration for a city this size, reflecting the wealth of its Hanseatic heyday. About a dozen remain as roofless ruins, their walls intact but open to the sky. The finest are St. Karin (St. Catherine's), whose soaring Gothic arches frame views of the surrounding limestone townhouses, and St. Lars, whose apse is almost completely preserved. Wildflowers and herbs grow from the walls in summer, and the ruins are freely accessible at all times. No admission, no crowds — just stone and sky.
