Dents du Midi

The Dents du Midi dominate the skyline east and south of Champéry — a dramatic serrated ridge of seven summits reaching to 3,257 metres, their jagged profiles visible from as far away as Lake Geneva on clear days. In summer, the high trails around and between the peaks attract serious hikers and alpinists; the traverse of the full ridge is a classic multi-day route for experienced mountaineers.

From Champéry, the lifts to Planachaux put you in good position for views of the Dents and for access to trails that skirt the lower shoulders of the massif. The peaks are not a beginner objective — the upper routes involve exposed scrambling and glacier travel — but the surrounding terrain is accessible and the views are spectacular whatever your level.

A story
Victor Hugo visited the Dents du Midi in 1839 and wrote about the serrated peaks in his travel journal. The range's seven summits — visible from large areas of the Rhône valley and from Lake Geneva on clear days — became a romantic icon of the Swiss Alps that appeared in countless nineteenth-century engravings and paintings.
