Bern Bridge

Fribourg's last remaining covered bridge, spanning the Sarine in the steep lower old town.

The Bern Bridge, or Pont de Berne, is the most atmospheric of Fribourg's old crossings. It spans the Sarine in the lower town, where the city's cliffs, river bends, and medieval streets make the geography feel unusually dramatic for a Swiss cantonal capital.

Its value is historical as well as scenic. Fribourg's old bridges date back to the medieval city, and this is the last covered bridge still standing here. Walk it as part of a lower-town loop rather than as an isolated stop; the bridge makes most sense when you approach it through the steep lanes and see how the city had to negotiate the river.
