Poya Bridge

The Pont de la Poya is Fribourg's newest landmark: a 179-metre cable-stayed bridge that carries road traffic across the Sarine gorge at the northern edge of the city. The bridge opened in 2014 after decades of planning and debate, providing a much-needed relief route to the historic town centre.

From an architectural standpoint, the bridge's twin white pylons and the curve of the deck over the deep gorge make a striking contrast with the sandstone towers of the medieval town visible just downstream. The best viewpoint is from the Poya Castle promontory or from the walking path along the river — looking back toward the city with the new bridge in the foreground and the old towers behind it gives you a vivid sense of Fribourg's layered history.

A story
The Poya Bridge opened in 2014 and immediately became controversial among Fribourgeois purists, who felt its modern cable-stayed design clashed with the medieval cityscape. The name — taken from the Gruyères tradition of the alpine transhumance procession called the désalpe or poya — was a deliberate attempt to root the very contemporary structure in local identity.
