La Maigrauge Abbey is a Cistercian convent on the banks of the Sarine river, founded in 1255 and continuously occupied by Cistercian nuns ever since — making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in Switzerland. The abbey church is open to visitors and contains some notable medieval stonework, though the community maintains an enclosure and the monastic quarters are not accessible.
The setting is quiet and rather beautiful: the white abbey buildings sit beside the river just downstream from the old town, surrounded by trees and separated from the city noise. The walk to Maigrauge along the river bank from the Basse-Ville takes about fifteen minutes and is one of the better short walks in and around the city.
