Berne Gate is one of the surviving pieces of Fribourg's medieval defences, guarding the approach into the lower town from the east. It is a sturdy, unshowy gate, but that is part of its charm: Fribourg's old quarters feel lived-in rather than museum-polished, and the gate still reads as part of a working city.
Use it as a marker on a walk through the Auge and Neuveville districts, where bridges, steep lanes and river bends show off the city's topography. The gate is not a long visit, but it helps make sense of Fribourg as a fortified town built around awkward terrain.
