Bible + Orient Museum

The Bible+Orient Museum at the University of Fribourg holds one of Switzerland's most specialised collections: ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern art and artefacts, assembled to illustrate the world described in the biblical texts. It is a scholarly museum, housed in the university buildings rather than a purpose-built gallery, and it draws an audience of religious studies students, archaeologists, and curious visitors.

The collection includes Egyptian figurines, Mesopotamian cylinder seals, Canaanite bronzes, and a range of objects that put the material culture of the ancient Near East into direct dialogue with biblical archaeology. The permanent exhibition is dense with explanatory material and works better if you have some prior interest in the period — but the objects themselves are genuinely ancient and well displayed.
