HR Giger Museum

The HR Giger Museum opened in 1998 in the Château Saint-Germain, a 15th-century Gothic building on the main street of Gruyères. The contrast between the medieval exterior and the biomechanical, deeply unsettling artworks inside is deliberate and effective. Giger is best known internationally for designing the xenomorph creature in Ridley Scott's film Alien, for which he won an Academy Award, but the museum shows the full range of his work: paintings, sculptures, furniture, and the preparations for his elaborate architectural pieces.

The museum also contains the "Giger Bar," where you sit inside a ribcage-shaped construction covered in biomechanical reliefs — an artwork you inhabit rather than observe. A separate museum nearby, the HR Giger Museum Bar, extends this immersive approach. Whether you find Giger's dark surrealism fascinating or disturbing, the museum is unlike anything else in Switzerland and entirely worth the visit.

A story
Giger was born in Chur and spent most of his career in Zurich, but he chose medieval Gruyères as the home for his museum — partly because the town's Gothic atmosphere suited his aesthetic, and partly because his partner Li Tobler had family connections to the region. He remained closely involved with the museum until his death in 2014.
