Caumasee

The Caumasee is a strikingly turquoise lake tucked into the forest between Flims and Laax, the most beautiful swimming spot in the area. The vivid colour comes from fine glacial sediment suspended in the water, and the lake's small size means it warms to swimable temperatures earlier in the season than most Alpine lakes. A wheelchair-accessible footpath circles the shore, and a historic funicular from 1939 descends from the road above.

The setting is quiet — no motorboats, no beach bars, just forest, clear water, and the sound of swimmers. It's popular with locals on summer weekends, less so on weekdays. From Laax, it's about a 40-minute walk through the forest or a short drive to Flims from where the funicular departs.

A story
The Caumasee is unusually warm for an Alpine lake — because of its small volume relative to its surface area, it heats up fast and stays warm. Swimmers are in the water by April, while much larger lakes at lower elevations are still cold. Summer temperatures typically reach 24°C at peak.
