Il Spir is a cantilevered viewing platform perched at the rim of the Ruinaulta gorge above the village of Conn, about 400 metres above the Rhine river below. Designed by architect Corinna Menn and opened in 2006, the platform is shaped like a common swift — narrow and pointed, jutting out over the void. Standing on it and looking straight down into the canyon is genuinely vertiginous.
There is no road access to the viewpoint. You walk from Flims-Waldhaus (about 45 minutes through the forest), which makes the arrival more satisfying. The platform is open year-round, and in winter the view is particularly dramatic — the white cliffs of the gorge streaked with ice, the dark river threading through the snow far below. The walk back can be extended into a longer loop through the gorge itself.
