Laax

Graubünden ski village sharing a vast lift system with Flims and Falera below the Vorab glacier.

Laax is a village in the Surselva valley of Graubünden, part of the LAAX ski resort that shares its lift system with Flims and Falera. Together they form the largest connected ski area in central Switzerland, with over 220 kilometres of pistes reaching up to the Vorab glacier at 3,018 metres.

In winter the resort draws a younger crowd than most Swiss ski villages, with a strong freestyle scene centred on the Crap Sogn Gion snowpark. In summer the same terrain turns into mountain biking and hiking country, with the Caumasee — a striking turquoise lake near Flims — as the highlight swim spot. Below the valley, the Ruinaulta Rhine Gorge offers one of Switzerland's most dramatic landscapes, and the Il Spir viewing platform gives a vertiginous look straight down into it.

The village itself is quiet and traditional, a cluster of Romansh-speaking houses below the lift station. Most of the resort infrastructure is up the mountain at Murschetg and Crap Sogn Gion rather than in the old village. After dark, the Mirasteilas Observatory in nearby Falera offers public stargazing sessions under some of the darkest skies in Switzerland.

Getting There

Laax is about two hours from Zurich by public transport. Take the train to Chur (about 80 minutes from Zurich), then a PostBus to Laax Murschetg (around 40 minutes). In winter, direct ski buses run from Zurich on winter weekends. By car from Zurich, follow the A3 then A13 to Chur, then west on the Flimserstrasse — about 90 minutes in light traffic, longer on winter Friday evenings when the road through the gorge gets congested.

The nearest airport is Zurich (ZRH). Geneva is possible but significantly further. Car hire from Zurich or Chur is the most flexible option for families with ski equipment.

Things to Do

Laax is a four-season resort, which means the infrastructure for winter skiing gets repurposed in summer for hiking and mountain biking. The lift network reaches the Vorab glacier, the Rhine Gorge cuts through the valley below, and the snowpark that draws freestyle skiers in January doubles as a training facility and events venue in warmer months.
