Mirasteilas Observatory

The Mirasteilas Observatory in nearby Falera is the largest publicly accessible astronomical observatory in Switzerland, operated by the Astronomical Society of Graubünden. At 1,288 metres, the site benefits from low light pollution and clear mountain air. The name means "stargazer" in Romansh. Public tours run on Friday and Saturday evenings, where visitors can use the main 90-centimetre Cassegrain reflector telescope capable of 1,000-fold magnification.

The observatory is a worthwhile stop in its own right, but the real appeal is the setting: looking up at an Alpine sky on a clear winter night, with the Vorab glacier gleaming above and the valley lights far below. The facility includes a small restaurant and offers educational programmes for cloudy nights when the telescope is out of action. The observatory also tracks asteroids and comets and submits its data to NASA's Minor Planet Center.
