Jaun Pass

The Jaunpass (1,509 m) is a mountain pass connecting the Simmental to the Gruyère region of Fribourg. The road over it is the western exit from the valley, open from roughly May to November — winter closure dates vary with snowfall. It is not a major transit route, which keeps it quiet.

The drive from Boltigen to the summit takes about 20 minutes. The road is well-maintained but narrow in sections and has some sharp switchbacks; drivers who find mountain roads uncomfortable should take it slowly. The views from the top look south over the Jaunbach valley and north back toward the Simmental.

On the Fribourg side, the village of Jaun itself is worth a brief stop — it is one of the few remaining German-speaking enclaves in an otherwise French canton, a linguistic anomaly that has kept it relatively isolated. From Jaun a road continues down to Charmey and the Gruyère heartland. The round trip from Zweisimmen over the Jaunpass to Gruyères town and back via the main road through Bulle makes a full day by car.

A story
The Jaun Pass is one of the few roads that connect the German-speaking Bernese Oberland with French-speaking Fribourg canton. The linguistic boundary runs roughly along the ridge, and within a few kilometres of the summit the signage switches language and the architecture shifts from dark wooden chalets to lighter stone farmhouses.
