Seebergsee

Seebergsee is a small alpine lake at 1,837 metres on the Seeberg pass above Zweisimmen, reached by road or trail from the valley. The lake is about 600 metres long and sits in open terrain, with the flanks of the Niderhorn and Männlifluh rising around it. The water is clear and, in summer, genuinely inviting for a swim — though cold even in August.

The drive up from Zweisimmen to the Seeberg pass takes about 30 minutes on a narrow road that is paved throughout. Walkers can reach the lake in around two hours from Zweisimmen via the Rinderberg ridge, with good views on the way. There is a small mountain restaurant at the lake that is open through the summer season.

The Seeberg pass road continues down the far side to Saanenmöser and Gstaad — an alternative back route that avoids returning the same way. The crossing adds maybe 20 minutes compared to the main valley road and has noticeably less traffic.

A story
The Seebergsee sits at 1,837 metres above a pass road that was once a significant trade route between the Bernese Oberland and the canton of Fribourg. For most of its history the lake had no name in common use — shepherds used the high pastures around it seasonally and the pass was too modest to attract famous visitors.
