Weissenburg Castle Ruins

The ruins of Weissenburg Castle stand on a wooded spur above the lower Simmental near Därstetten, reached by a 20-minute walk from the Weissenburg train station. The walls are substantially intact and give a good sense of the scale of the original structure. The site is unfenced and open at all times.

The setting is better than the ruins themselves: the ridge position looks out over the valley and across to the opposite slopes, and the walk up through mixed forest is pleasant in any season. There are no information panels or visitor facilities, which is either authentic or frustrating depending on your expectations.

The village of Weissenburg below the station is best known for the Weissenburg thermal baths, which used sulphurous spring water — though the historic bathhouse itself is long gone and the current facilities are a modern spa. The springs have been in use since the sixteenth century, which adds a layer of context to a stop that might otherwise seem thin.

A story
The lords of Weissenburg controlled the lower Simmental from this ridge for most of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Their castle changed hands several times through marriage and debt before the Bernese took the valley in 1386, at which point the strategic need for the fortress declined and it was gradually abandoned.
