Diavolezza

Diavolezza — "little devil" in Romansh — is the glacier ski area of the St. Moritz ski domain, reached by cable car from the Bernina valley about 15 kilometres from the resort. At 3,000 metres, it offers high-altitude skiing with views of the Piz Bernina, the Morteratsch glacier, and a sweep of peaks along the Swiss-Italian border. The terrain is more challenging than Corviglia, with off-piste routes descending to Morteratsch that require a guide and reasonable ski competence.

In summer, Diavolezza is the starting point for glacier hikes and the base for the classic Diavolezza traverse, a half-day route crossing the Pers glacier to Celerina. The cable car runs year-round, and the terrace restaurant at the top is one of the better mountain lunch stops in the Engadin — not cheap, but the Piz Bernina rising across the void tends to justify the bill.
