Muottas Muragl

Muottas Muragl is the viewpoint hill northeast of St. Moritz, reached by funicular from Punt Muragl in the valley. At 2,454 metres, the summit terrace looks out over the full chain of Engadin lakes — St. Moritz, Silvaplana, and Sils — with the peaks of the Bernina massif closing the view to the south. It is arguably the finest single panorama in the Upper Engadin and worth the detour even in the middle of a ski trip.

The walking trail back down to Samedan takes about two hours and follows the hillside through larch forest with the valley spread below. In winter, the funicular runs for night sledging, with a traditional sled track descending 1.3 kilometres back to the valley. The mountain hotel at the summit has simple rooms and is popular with hikers who time their stay for the alpenglow at dusk.
