Grande Place

A vast square that opens onto the lakefront, Grande Place is the centre of Vevey life. Saturday morning is the big day — one of Switzerland's best open-air markets fills the square with regional produce, cheese, charcuterie, wine, and flowers from early in the morning until early afternoon. A smaller market runs on Tuesdays.

The square also hosts the Saturday "Marche Folklorique" in July and August, when local wine growers set up stalls and serve their wines from traditional tastevins for a token few francs. Outside market hours the square is mostly empty and feels too big — that is the point of the Fete des Vignerons, when it finally fills up.

A story
At 22,000 square metres, Grande Place is one of the largest open squares in Europe — bigger than St Mark's in Venice. The size was deliberate: it was laid out in the 1840s to accommodate the wine-growers' processions of the Fete des Vignerons.
