Villa Le Lac

A small but seminal modernist house designed by Le Corbusier in 1923 for his parents, the Villa Le Lac sits directly on the lakeshore in the suburb of Corseaux, about 2 km west of central Vevey. UNESCO listed it in 2016 as part of the Le Corbusier transnational world heritage site.

The villa is open as a museum on limited days — generally Wednesdays through Sundays in the warmer months. The famous horizontal window, the rooftop garden, and the tiny, perfectly proportioned interior reward a visit even for non-architects. Allow an hour. The CGN lake steamer stops at Corseaux landing, 5 minutes' walk away.

A story
Le Corbusier built the long, low villa for his parents in 1923 and instructed them to live in it for the rest of their lives — which they did. He restricted the windows to a single horizontal slot across the lake-facing wall, to focus the eye outwards onto the water and the mountains.
