Castle Kyburg sits above the Töss valley just southeast of Winterthur, close enough for an easy half-day trip but rural enough to feel like a proper escape from the city. The castle is one of the best preserved medieval strongholds in the Zurich region, with courtyards, towers, domestic rooms, and views that explain why the site mattered long before it became a museum.
The visit is strongest if you like your history tangible rather than abstract. You can move through furnished rooms, armour displays, kitchens, and prison spaces while looking back toward Winterthur and the wooded valley below. It pairs well with the Fotomuseum or Kunst Museum in town: one gives you modern Winterthur, the other its feudal backstory.
