Winterthur

Former Swiss industrial city with a compact old town and an unusually rich concentration of art museums.

Winterthur is Switzerland's sixth-largest city and, improbably for a former industrial town, one of the country's best destinations for art. The Oskar Reinhart collections alone — split between a hillside villa and a museum in town — hold works by Cranach, El Greco, Renoir, Cézanne, and van Gogh. Add the Fotomuseum, the Kunstmuseum, and the Gewerbemuseum (design museum) and you have a concentration of galleries that rivals cities many times its size.

The old town is compact and pedestrianised, with a twice-weekly market on the Graben and a lively cafe scene. Winterthur is 20 minutes by train from Zurich, making it an easy half-day trip — though the museums deserve more time than most visitors give them.
