Fotomuseum Winterthur

One of Europe's leading photography museums, housed in a former factory

The Fotomuseum Winterthur is one of the most respected photography museums in Europe, presenting both historical and contemporary work with equal seriousness. The exhibition programme rotates frequently, covering documentary photography, fine art photography, and the blurry territory between — expect to find names from Diane Arbus to Wolfgang Tillmans alongside emerging artists you won't have encountered before.

The building itself is a former factory in the Technorama quarter, east of the city centre. The industrial bones are still visible — high ceilings, raw concrete — and suit the work well. The museum also runs an active publishing programme and a well-stocked bookshop focused on photography titles. It is open Tuesday to Sunday and admission is reasonably priced by Swiss standards.

A story
Winterthur's Fotomuseum was founded in 1993 in a converted industrial building — fitting for a city whose prosperity came from manufacturing. It was one of the first institutions in Europe to treat photography as a primary art form rather than a lesser cousin to painting, and its library holds over 600,000 photographic prints and negatives.
