The Kunstmuseum Winterthur holds one of the finest art collections in Switzerland, covering European painting and sculpture from the 15th century to the present day. The permanent collection is particularly strong in 19th- and early-20th-century work: van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, and Hodler all feature prominently, alongside a substantial body of Swiss art rarely seen elsewhere.
The museum occupies two buildings a short walk apart — the older Annex and the main building — and has expanded thoughtfully over the decades without losing the sense of intimate engagement with individual works. The sculpture garden between the buildings holds pieces by Rodin and Giacometti. Allow at least two hours for the permanent collection alone; temporary exhibitions are often excellent and draw international loans.
