Frauenbad Stadthausquai

Women-only river bathing house, since 1888 — a barfoot deck floating on the Limmat

The Frauenbad — sometimes called the Stadthausquai Bath — is a wooden swimming deck floating on the Limmat just below the Fraumünster, with a sun-deck, changing cubicles and direct access to the river current. During the daytime swimming hours it is strictly women-only (and topless tanning is normal), a deliberately preserved Victorian arrangement that has become a feature of Zurich life.

After 8 p.m. the deck reopens as the Barfussbar ("Barefoot Bar"), open to all but with the rule that shoes must be removed at the entrance. The setting — wooden deck inches above the river, the floodlit Fraumünster spire above, perhaps a quiet jazz duo on a Friday — is one of the most distinctive evening spots in the city. Cash bar; cocktails are excellent. Closed in winter.

A story
Built in 1888 to allow women to bathe in the Limmat away from the disapproving male public eye, the Frauenbad is one of two surviving river bathing houses in central Zurich. By day it is strictly female-only; by night the structure becomes the open-to-all 'Barfussbar' — the Barefoot Bar.
