Swallow's Nest Castle

The Swallow's Nest sits on the edge of Aurora Cliff near the village of Gaspra, about 12 km west of Yalta, and is the defining image of the Crimean Riviera. The small neo-Gothic castle — barely more than a decorative tower — juts out over a 40-meter rock face dropping straight to the Black Sea below. It looks improbable from land; from the sea it looks impossible.

Getting there from Yalta is easy by marshrutka or sea ferry — the boat approach gives the best view. The castle itself is small and the interior not especially remarkable; what you come for is the outlook from the terrace over the sea and the coast stretching away in both directions. Allow time to walk along the cliff path, which offers changing angles on the castle and views across the Gulf of Yalta. The nearby restaurant is pleasant for lunch with a view.

A story
The castle was designed in 1912 by the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood for a German oil baron named Baron von Steingel, who wanted something that looked like a Rhine valley fortress transplanted to the Crimean cliffs. Sherwood gave him a fantasy neo-Gothic tower barely 10 meters wide perched on a 40-meter rock face above the sea. After the revolution it became a restaurant, then was damaged by an earthquake in 1927, and was eventually restored in the 1960s. It is now the most photographed spot on the Crimean coast.
