Golden Gate of Kyiv

The Golden Gate was the main ceremonial entrance to medieval Kyiv. Yaroslav the Wise built it in the 1030s as part of the city walls, with a church dedicated to the Annunciation on its upper level. After centuries as a ruin it was reconstructed in 1982 for the city's 1500th anniversary, on the original foundations.

A small museum inside the reconstructed gate covers the history of medieval Kyiv. The park around it, with its statue of Yaroslav on a bench, is a pleasant place to sit and is one of the obvious starting points for a walk through the Upper Town.

A story
The original Golden Gate, built by Yaroslav the Wise in 1037, stood for two centuries before the Mongols breached it in 1240 and reduced it to rubble. What you see today is a contentious 1982 Soviet reconstruction, built without surviving plans — many Ukrainian historians regard it as fanciful, but it remains the only marker of the medieval city's edge.
