When to Go

Kyiv's climate is continental: long, cold winters (January averages around -4°C, with frequent days below -10°C and lying snow from December to February) and warm summers (July around 21°C with peaks into the low 30s). The best months are May, June, and September — warm but not yet humid, long days, the parks at their best.

July and August can be uncomfortably hot and dusty in the city; many residents leave for their dachas. Winter has its own beauty, especially around Christmas and the gold-domed churches in snow, but the cold is serious and the days are short.

Before the war, the spring and autumn book fairs at Mystetskyi Arsenal, the Kyiv International Film Festival in October, and the New Year's celebrations on Sofiyivska Square were the city's major events. These continue in modified form; check the calendar.

The 2022 Russian invasion has made travel decisions a security question, not just a weather one. Current travel advice from your government should be consulted before any visit.
