Holodomor Victims Memorial

The Holodomor Memorial stands on a hillside above the Dnieper between the Pechersk Lavra and the Motherland Monument. The underground museum below the central plaza tells the story of the 1932-33 Stalinist famine with restraint and force; the architecture, by Anatoliy Haidamaka, is deliberately funereal.

The memorial is free to enter and worth at least an hour. It is best combined with a visit to the Lavra; the walk between the two takes about fifteen minutes along the Vichnoyi Slavy Park ridge.

A story
The Holodomor — the artificial famine of 1932-33 — killed somewhere between three and seven million Ukrainians, with deaths concentrated in the grain-growing oblasts. The memorial focuses on a haunting bronze figure of a starving child holding a handful of wheat, and on a Hall of Memory whose walls list villages in which entire populations died.
