The country's main collection of Ukrainian art, housed in a 1900 neoclassical building near Mariinsky Park. Galleries cover medieval icons (notably from the Lviv school), 18th- and 19th-century portraiture, the realist landscapes of Taras Shevchenko, and the strikingly modernist work of Mykhailo Boychuk and Oleksandr Bohomazov from the 1910s and 20s, much of which the Soviets later suppressed.
The collection of Ukrainian avant-garde — Kazimir Malevich began his career in Kyiv, and the museum holds early pieces — is the standout. Entry is inexpensive and rarely crowded.
